“My Great-great-grandfather John Podlesnik was from Maribor, Slovenia. He came to the US in 1909. Growing up, every time we would leave my grandfather's house we would say "lahko noč" which means goodnight in Slovenian. When I was older I read an article in Time Magazine about Slovenia being the "Gem of Europe." I had never taken the time out to look it up but was enamored by the fairy tale like beauty I saw in the photographs and the history about the country and it's highly visited Lake Bled so I ripped it out, saved it and told myself that I would travel there someday. Fast forward 15 some years later and there I was, on Lake Bled looking at the emerald-green lake, picture-postcard church on an islet, a medieval castle clinging to a rocky cliff and some of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps and the Karavanke that captured me so long ago. It felt so surreal to finally be there alongside one of my sisters as the first two in 5 generations to return to this beautiful country...”
